Littleton Historical Farm

Melissa and I have been talking about going to the Littleton Historical Museum for awhile now and thought we would go during fall break. We were both very grumpy when we realized our fall breaks didn't line up. Melissa's kids only get 2 days and it was last week when her girls were just getting out of quarantine and the weather was quite chilly. Dagny and Lincoln had this week off and so we decided to just go with these kids. It turned out perfect that Claire and Millie both have field trips today so they won't feel too bad about not getting to come.

The blacksmith shop is one of my favorite things at the farm. They have a blacksmith making tools just like they did in the 1860's. He showed us how he gets the metal really hot and

and then hammers it into the shape he wants to make a tool. 

Then he dips it into a tub of cold water a few times to cool it down. It hisses and steams. He uses his knuckles to tap on it to see if it is cool enough. He let Dagny have a try tapping it. 

It's amazing to think about how we build things today and how much harder and time consuming it was back then.

We went to see the animals next. Calista checks out the cow nose to nose.

It's interesting to look inside the old farmhouse. It is small and crowded with a lot of furniture. Calista was very interested in this little doll house while Dagny and Maddie thought a doll bed was pretty cool. It was so hard for them not to touch things.

I think this was supposed to be a double bed, but it looks pretty narrow. The kids have such sweet smiles in this picture.

Such a pretty wash basin, but I am sure thankful for hot running water, faucets, and sinks!

The best part about the pigs: Dagny was quite perturbed they weren't pink! It is rather strange  that pigs are portrayed as being pink in books and movies, when in real life they are black or dark brown.

This one was huge! I don't think I've ever seen a pig this big before.

Emma was so happy to be outside going for a walk. She was good and looked around at everything.

The pumpkin patch was the kids favorite thing! They loved running around and walking on top of all the pumpkins.

Who knew that pumpkins make such a good chairs?

Of course they wanted to pick one up and carry it around.

Dagny found the biggest one. She could barely carry it. You can buy these pumpkins, but I don't know I would get them to the car without losing a child.

These hay bales were part of a photo taking station. Someone else was using them, so we let the kids play on the edge. It was too sunny to get a very good picture anyway.

After about an hour and a half of walking around, the kids were hungry, so we set out the picnic blanket and had some lunch. 

Food always tastes better outside for some reason.

We had our lunch under this huge tree with such pretty leaves. I tried to get a picture, but it doesn't do it justice. I should have been on the other side where all the leaves are yellow.

 The kids were too hot and tired to see the school house and the old farm equipment, but this gives us a good reason to come back in the spring with Millie and Dagny. It's always fun to spend a day on the farm!
